Tier 2

Targeted Group Interventions

What is Tier 2?

Tier 2 supports refer to the practices and systems that enable targeted interventions for students who are not successful with Tier 1 supports alone. The focus at Tier 2 is supporting students who are at risk for developing more serious unwanted behaviors before the start. Essentially, intervention at this level is more targeted than Tier 1, but less intensive than Tier 3.

In the PBIS triangle, the yellow represents Tier 2 that supports some students. These students still receive Tier 1 supports.

Multi-tiered systems of support stem from having a strong foundation of Tier 1 support. With schoolwide systems in place, schools can readily identify student for who Tier 1 alone has not met their needs.

Thinking about Tier 2...

First, ask "who?"

Who?

Who needs more support?

Second, ask "what?"

What?

What interventions will we provide?

Last, ask "now what?"

Now what?

What do we do if it works? If it doesn't?
